About Me
If you decide to read this Site, you will find that I am approaching this problem of the psychiatrization of human beings from basically four different perspectives on it.
They are:

  1. From that of a former aid who was employed to work one to one with ‘clients’ inside a psychiatric hospital, through a health care agency.
  1. As a member (in long standing) of various dysfunctional groups and from within a variety of dysfunctional relationships.
  1. As a targeted person ‘chosen’ for psychiatrization who has now had first hand experience of psychosis (‘decompensation’) and experienced real, long term re-integration and recovery while being drug free since 1997.
  1. As someone who has found out a great deal about what is going on in psychiatry in general and with the relationship with it in particular, as well as with whole communities which they now involve in ‘saving’ people who are all very much like me. (This is of course, whether we want to be ‘saved’ by the Psychiatric Faith or not.)
I do hope this Website offers you some of the understanding you may be looking for. I also hope that it helps to make the experience from the ‘patient’ point of view, a view long suppressed, ignored, and psychiatrized, become a better understood REALITY for the reader, especially those readers like mental illness pros, friends and family who really don’t understand it now.
It is not so ‘complex’ that it cannot be understood if you take the time to look and listen. Very often, it is only made to appear ‘complex’ as a smokescreen used to conceal the perfectly obvious. It is the obvious that is not seen.
Paradoxically then, this site is about reframing ‘reality’ in more realistic terms.

Many people have presented me with the following challenge: ‘People suffer. Often, good therapists can help relieve suffering, and suffering people deserve to have insurance pay for their therapy. But insurance companies won’t pay unless the person gets a psychiatric diagnosis. However, psychiatric diagnosis is unscientific and has often caused both direct and indirect, devastating effects in people’s lives. So what is the solution?”

 

 

I intend to do some explaining here about how it is that I have come to suffer with a previously unknown psychiatric disorder which I have tentatively named The Equality Complex. Life can be made very difficult for those of us who suffer from this seemingly new 'disorder' since most of our fellow humans have the more normal conditions known as the inferiority/superiority complexes.

Here, I will do my best to explain how this unusual mindset tends to isolate us from the majority. Included will be suggestions of reading materials, videos and my own writing behaviours intended to enlighten the masses.....

'Fascinating' Double Binds

Psychiatrists (and a whole host of others) like to tell us over and over again, 'You must forgive them..."
Since the people you are telling us we must 'forgive' say they have done nothing wrong and that we are only 'claiming' they have (usually to 'just seek attention/fame') WHAT exactly is it for which we should be forgiving them? This is the kind of thing of which  'we' have 'trouble making sense.'


Genius/Madness

You know it gets stated over and over again that there is a thing line that separates genius form madness.  I notice unfortunately that ‘the line’ is often composed of job titles or political status. I wonder how many geniuses offending the sensibilities  of those in their own time periods, disappeared into the back wards of lunatic asylums- or even worse.


 

 
 
 

Books Recommended

 

There are two books I would like to recommend to psychiatric survivours and anyone else who is interested in understanding the need for anti psychiatry activism or alternative mental health systems which are currently moving AWAY from psychiatry. Ironically, these two books are also written by a psychiatrist and offer validation of something which I saw myself within my own experience with dysfunctional families, cults and psychiatry itself.

The books are:

 

The Wrong Way Home: Uncovering the Patterns of Cult Behaviour in American Society and

Them and Us: Cult Thinking and the Terrorist Threat, By Arthur J. Deikman, M.D. (both published 1990)

 

Both of these books acknowledge the existence of a pattern which I, and many others, have seen for many years. Seeing this has often earned us a psychiatric label. Mine was Delusional Disorder, Paranoid. In them you will find some of the experiences we have had as 'patients’ which are denied by psychiatry. How ironic is that?

I intend to use some quote from these books as a means of explaining my own connections to this and the new understanding that evolved from it.

GOING BEYOND DEPENDENCE

“Compliance with the group and dependence on a leader have served necessary functions in the survival of the human race. They are important in childhood where they provide safety, security, encouragement, and support. Groups and leaders have legitimate functions for adults as well. They can stimulate, reinforce and guide individuals’ energies in constructive ways; they provide meaning and counter isolation and loneliness with acceptance and warmth. But the fantasy of parents must be transcended by adults; for it is no longer functional.  (emphasis mine PL)...

Indeed, regressive dependency makes our survival and progress more difficult because reality must be distorted in order to construct shepherds out of sheep. ...

...As a psychotherapist, I find the parent world in the fantasies of people with normal and useful adult positions—teachers, housewives, carpenters, lawyers, executives, students—people in all the occupations that comprise everyday society. The evidence is strong in that all of us show the effects of having been raised in a hierarchical world in which there were those above us and those below. From such a perspective there is always a higher authority. ...

...the quickest tip-off that something is amiss occurs when you see members of a group devalue outsiders while ignoring the faults of the leader and fellow believers. Outsiders—Them—are defined as inferior, bad or damned. Those in the cult group—Us—are perceived as superior, good or saved. We see this in the most extreme form in the mind of the terrorist.
